Trombone Concerto (2023)

tenor trombone and orchestra (2.2.2.2 - 4.2.2.1 - timp - 1perc - harp - strings)
c. 16 mins

Trombone Concerto was composed for David Robins and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as part of the 2022-23 Australian Composers School. The centrepiece of the concerto is a lyrical eight-minute middle movement. This is bookended by fast movements of three and four minutes, the first dark and quirky, the second vigorous and optimistic. A short cadenza opens the third movement, during which the performer is free to extemporise on the written part.

David Robins premiered Trombone Concerto with the TSO and conductor Luke Dollman in the Federation Concert Hall on 23 October 2023. It is dedicated to Dave and the orchestra with my heartfelt thanks for their guidance and support.
