Rondo for Soup (2023)

for clarinet, cello & piano
c. 4’30’’

When a cat appeared in my kitchen one afternoon, I had no idea it was the start of a routine. Two years on, Soup continues to visit, coming and going from her happy home one street away. My intention in Rondo for Soup was to capture an essence of this pattern. Day alternates with night. The tree outside my window gifts its leaves to the wind. Soup arrives and departs, bringing with her a gentle, uncomplicated friendship.

Rondo for Soup was composed for the Australia Ensemble as part of the 2022-23 Layton Emerging Composer Fellowship.
