How Far to Pelican Island? was composed for the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered at their 2024 Kids Proms. It draws on the classic children's tune Heads and Shoulders, Knees and Toes, and is designed to introduce children to a variety of orchestral sounds within an accessibly modern soundworld. However, the piece also suits general programming by student, community, and professionals ensembles alike.

I composed the heart of How Far to Pelican Island? while on holiday with family in southern Tasmania, and the setting imbues the music. Growing up, Easter trips were a formative part of my childhood, and the piece became a meditation on holidays past and present. The music is playful and relaxed, including moments of adventure, and a happily tired trudge towards home. But, to me at least, there is also a hint of wistfulness and nostalgia which perhaps the 'grown up' kids in the room will understand.

How Far to Pelican Island? was generously commissioned by Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra with a gift made in memory of Ruth and Dennis Gibbings.

Recording coming soon.
