Mountain (2022)

Mountain is inspired by kunanyi/Mount Wellington, a landmark in the Tasmanian capital of Hobart. Before starting this piece, I sought stories about kunanyi from the community and was struck by how the mountain is both private and communal. On the one hand, it is shared: a constant presence in the background of our daily lives. On the other, it is private: the setting for many moments of personal significance. My piece attempts to capture both.

In 'Dawn', the ensemble ascends like the morning sun, incorporating material drawn from the calls of honeyeaters that inhabit the mountain. 'On the Pipeline Trail' imagines a day of childhood adventure, as recounted to me by a member of the community. 'Tarn with Bubbles (and Organ Pipes in the Background)' suggests a glistening mountain lake, the iconic "organ pipes" rock formation towering behind.

Mountain was generously commissioned by the Hobart Chamber Orchestra and is dedicated to the ensemble. HCO and conductor Gary Wain premiered Mountain on 24 September 2023 at the Hobart Town Hall. - Read review in Limelight.
