Embers (2020)

Embers for wind symphony is a response to the 2019-20 Australian bushfires and is inspired by the process of regrowth. During the summer, 17 million hectares of land burnt and over one billion animals died according to the Parliament of Australia library. In this piece, I use the ensemble as an analogue for the land and soloists from within the ensemble as analogues for people. The ensemble begins weak but is nurtured back to health through the collective effort of the soloists. The piece presents a cautiously optimistic vision for how the land may recover with our assistance.

The Hobart Wind Symphony and conductor Simon Reade premiered Embers on 13 August 2022 at the Hobart Town Hall.
