After Fanfares received one of two highly commended awards in the 2016 Jean Bogan Youth Prize for Piano Composition. The premiere performance was given by Jack Barnes at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and the work is dedicated to Jack in admiration of his facility and flair.

I composed After Fanfares between April and July 2016, shortly after moving from Hobart to Sydney. Although there is nothing programmatic about the piece, I believe the newness of my surroundings had an impact on the work. Sometimes the music is fluid, but more often it is fragmentary. Sometimes it is forceful, but more often it is fragile.
